Automatic Identification System (AIS) is transponder system for ships to avoid a collisions. They are designed to be capable of providing information about the ship to other ships and to coastal authorities automatically. The system gives information to all the ships in specific area, their speed and courses and how to contact them. This information is publically broadcast on VHF radio which can be picked up either by other ships or by shore based receivers. AIS is intended to increase the safety at sea. An AIS transmitter regularly transmits the ship's position, heading, speed and MMSI. This data is received by ships in the vicinity. The data can be plotted automatically on a digital map or radar screen.
